Members Making Connections Make a Difference
For Dr. Mary Tom Berry, a member connection made all the difference in the world. Sometimes, keeping a member engaged in DKG is all about simple acts of kindness. Dr. Berry had been a member of DKG for over 50 years when she moved from Tennessee to Mississippi. While transferring to a new area and a new chapter can be hard enough, imagine how hard it can be during a time in life when getting out and meeting new friends is impossible!
So, a longtime friend and TN member, Rita King, made the effort to connect with another member in Dr. Berry’s new home city of Ridgeland, MS. She called Society Headquarters and was connected with Christine Wall, who was Pi Chapter President at that time. Christine found time to visit Dr. Berry almost every two weeks: spending time with her at the assisted living facility, bringing home-made treats, clothes and gifts funded by her Tennessee friends, and taking her out for dinner or even a day-long excursion. Christine kept Dr. Berry’s Tennessee chapter up to date – bridging the distance between these lifelong DKG friends. Dr. Berry passed away February 15, 2016. However, thanks to the connection between Dr. Berry and Christine Wall and the efforts of Rita King, the last days of her life were graced by the care and support of her DKG friends.
Has your chapter lost members to a recent move? Whether a member is a reserve member who is moving home to live near relatives or an active member making a life change, help her settle into her new home with a connection to a new chapter. Your efforts could result in a new “Berry-Wall Connection,” too!
