Degrees of Inequality
Culture, Class, and Gender in American Higher Education
By Ann L. Mullen, 2010

Degrees of Inequality: Culture, Class, and Gender in American Higher Education describes the result of interviews of 100 students at two different universities: Yale and Southern Connecticut State University. Mullen analyzes the impact gender, economic and social background has on educational choices. The author explains in depth the methodology and sample techniques in detail. The text shows the history of the two institutions, comparison of high school experiences of those interviewed and student choices for college, years at college, field of study and views of knowledge gained during college.

Mullen informs readers how a disparity exists before students begin to apply for college acceptance. Her interpretation explains the mistaken conception that expanding higher education has on social structure.

Ann Mullen received her B. A. in humanities from the University of California at Berkeley. She holds a M. A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University. She joined the sociology department at the University of Toronto in 2003. In 2008 she was awarded a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Standard Research Grant. Her research interest focuses on the complex relationships between social inequality and higher education.
