VA Alpha Mu’s New Teacher Connect Project
Manassas, VA
Some novice teachers in Prince William County and Manassas City Schools were both surprised and supported through Alpha Mu’s New Teacher Connect Project. Because starting a new year as a novice teacher in these COVID times can be intimidating and lonely, Alpha Mu members wanted the teachers to know that there are educators who are here for support. Chapter members gave generously with monetary donations and supplies to fill over 40 bags with items new teachers need in their classrooms such as pens, folders, post-its, markers, tape, and stickers. A Betty Knowles Instructional Grant application and a brochure with an inspirational message as well as information about DKG and Alpha Mu were included. Erin Hara Anderson, Membership Chair, organized the project and the bags, aided by her daughter Cecilee, who earned community service hours at her Pennington Traditional School. Erin Merrill, Professional and Personal Growth Chair, designed the teacher grant application with a QR code to reach teachers in both school districts.
