Book project celebrates women educators and area’s public education.
Delta Chapter in the District of Columbia, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the District of Columbia Public Schools system, set out to recognize a few of the women educators who were key to success and stability of the district. They began with 33 names - a list of women for whom buildings had been named and who were singled out for recognition. The list quickly became 76 and then the research began. As the list grew, the decision was made to recognize 75 in honor of the 75th anniversary of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the same year as the 200th for the District of Columbia Public Schools. However, the book with its several parts is a beautiful recognition of not only history but the impact that hundreds of women educators in the District of Columbia have made upon the children, the public schools and the communities of the area.
Published in 2015, the expanded version of Two Hundred Years of Public Education in the Nation’s Capital 1804-2014, edited by Dr. Marion E. Hines, is the collaborative work of members from Delta Chapter with the assistance others in the District of Columbia State Organization. While many chapters may not be inclined to publish a book, the project certainly leads us to reflect on the importance of our history and the need to document it. By doing so, we can ensure the remembrance of DKG members and others who have truly been Leading Women Educators Impacting Education Worldwide.
